She spoke about her illness to Billboard and admitted this was the reason she did not finished her 2013 tour. At the time some stories about it showed up but she never addressed them.
The hardest thing for her, at the time was dealing with tabloids: “I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke. I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”
She also admitted that she had to go to therapy to deal with haters on the internet and media, but at the same time that made her grow stronger. When she went to therapy to deal with her issues stories emerged how she is actually in a rehab, but that was not true. “I’m so fucking nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me. I’ve been working since I was 7. I’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story.”
“The hate motivated me. This is my time. I’ve deserved this. I earned it. This is all me.” She did not wanted to talk about Justin Bieber and through the entire interview she managed to avoid this issue, but she was more than glad to talk about Taylor Swift and how she helped her trough her hard time. “Taylor makes me feel empowered, like I can trust new people. All of those girls are so dope. We ran around taking pictures, changing dresses, dancing — super-cliche girly stuff, but it rocked. The way she cares about women is so adamant. It’s pulling me out of my shell.”
