This Wednesday Halle Berry visited Imagine VIP cocktail party for Janesse Center, an organization that deals with domestic violence prevention and intervention. She was invited to do a speech in which she talked about her own experience with this topic.

Here are some parts of that speech: “I saw my mother battered and beaten many years of my life and I felt helpless. And that’s what connects me to this organization. I have an understanding, a knowing. I feel like I have something that I can impart to these women.”

“It seems like I’ve overcome it, but I really haven’t. In the quiet of my mind, I still struggle. So while I’m helping these women, I’m helping myself through it, too. And that’s largely why I’m here.”

“I say something that’s very simple, I tell them that if a man or anyone lays their hands on you one time, they will do it again; if it happened once, girl, it’s gonna happen again, and you have to go, you have to love yourself and your kids enough to go.”

For the Extra magazine she spoke about her split even though it is been just nine days since they filed for divorce. She was married to Olivier Martinez for two years. She says that she is doing fine and that she focus her mind on other things while recovering.

“I’m doing okay, I really am,” Halle says. “I keep pushing and I’m really happy to be here because whenever you’re going through anything in life, when you step outside yourself and focus on others, that’s always the best remedy for any situation that you’d rather not be dealing with.”

They filed for divorce because of irreconcilable differences, but some sources add that his temper was the thing that waged the decision.
