Gillian Anderson Was Initially Offered A Lot Less Money Than Her Partner David Duchovny For “X-Files” Reboot

Gillian talked about this injustice in an interview with the Daily Beast and she was pretty infuriated. First offer she got was half of David’s earnings for the same thing. This struck many as a surprise since lately there were a lot of talk from other actresses about this kind of inequality.

This what she said:

“I’m surprised that more interviewers haven’t brought that up because it’s the truth. Especially in this climate of women talking about the reality of [unequal pay] in this business, I think it’s important that it gets heard and voiced. It was shocking to me, given all the work that I had done in the past to get us to be paid fairly. I worked really hard toward that and finally got somewhere with it.”

In January she warned that this might happen, while the negotiations were still on. This is what she said for The Hollywood Reporter at the time:

“There’s no point in dealing with my side [first] because, as usual, they come to me with half of what they want to offer David.”

Anderson also shared her experiences when they filmed first episodes. At that time it was the same story. “They wanted me to be the sidekick” were her words on the subject. However, Gillian managed to fight for same conditions as her co-star. Even though this happened before she expected that times has changed and that she would not have to go through the same thing again.

Patricia Arquette spoke about this problem on Academy Awards saying that it is time to have wage equality which means equal rights for women.

Jennifer Lawrence also pointed out this in many of her interviews in the last year.

Gillian will be paid as much as David, however it is alarming that industry even considered smaller paycheck for her just because she is a woman.
