Winona Ryder (Winona Laura Horowitz) was born on October 29, 1971 in Winona, Minnesota, USA. She is an American actress known for dark, and a little bit bizarre roles in such movies as ‘Girl, Interrupted’ and ‘Heathers’.

Finely blending her talent and beauty in every performance she made on-screen, ‘Winona became a famous actor not just in America but a household name in all over world. Winona was catapulted to the center of the spotlight and became a teen icon of her generation.

Early life

She is a daughter of hippie intellectual writers Michael Horowitz and Cynthia Palmer who both founded Fitz Hugh Ludlow Memorial Library. She is named after one of the cities in Minnesota. With her three siblings she spent her early childhood in San Francisco before resided in a remote commune near Elk, California at the age of 7.

From a young age she had a strong interest in reading, but when her mother showed her some classic movies, she felt that she wants to be an actor too. She was bullied at school so her parents concluded to rather give their daughter a home study to recover from the trauma.


When she was 13, with a help by the agent, she enthusiastically made her debut in the drama ‘Lucas’ (1986). But her name people remembered forever when they were captured by her enactment as frustrated goth teenager Lydia Deetz in Tim Burton’s 1988 box-office hit, ‘Beetle Juice.’ Next year she received huge critical praise for her portrayal in cult classic movie of ‘Heathers’ (1989) with co-star Christian Slater.

She further solidified the label through her 1990 pictures of ‘Edward Scissorhands’ and ‘Mermaids’ which directed her to earn Golden Globes nomination for Best Performance by an Actress. Next shifted to mature role in ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ (1992), followed by that in ‘The Age of Innocence’ (1993), Winona finally came to the highlight of her career when the latter film brought her to once again obtain a nomination at Golden Globe Awards. In 1995, the actress won her second Oscar nomination, this time for the category of Best Actress in a Leading Role through her stunning performance in ‘Little Women’.

Winona has been romantically linked to several different actors and musicians, including Dave Pirner from the band ‘Soul Asylum’ and Johnny Depp. Sadly, all the glory and accolades Winona had received were stained when security employees at department store caught her of attempting to steal many pieces of clothes.


An actress was not only charged for stealing, but also was accused of using pain medication without valid prescriptions. This brought dreadful impact to Winona’s career in film industry as she seemed to disappear, but she rose against all this and still is filming today.
