Biography Of Padma Lakshmi

Padma (Parvati) Lakshmi was born on September 01, 1970 in Madras, India. She is best known by being a model. But also her worldwde fame came from in TV program “Top Chef” (2006-2009) in which she was a judge.

After that she was able to cash her popularity and besides being a famous model and the host of Top Chef, she also launched her own kitchen ware line and jewelry line.

Early life

Her parents divorced when she was 2 and Lakshmi was raised in the United States with her mother Vijaya. Her father, Vaidyanathan, had left her and her mother when she was one year old. Lakshmi lived with her maternal grandparents in Chennai for two years before joining her mother in America. Her parents later remarried again. She attended and graduated in William Workman High School in the City of Industry in California. A few years after she received a Bachelor’s degree in Theater Arts from Clark University in 1992.


When she graduated in Theatre arts, she began to start modeling professionally .Padmas ‘s industry career took off at the age of 20 when she was discovered by a modeling agent in Spain. She has been a model for Alberta Ferretti ,Ralph Lauren and Roberto Cavalli. In 2009 issue of Allure magazine, she has been completely naked.

Her first two Bollywood films, Sandokan: ‘The Darkness and the Light’ (1998) and ‘Caribbeans’ (1999), wich were averige by the audience, but they did brought her popularity in India. She has also appeared in the movie ‘Glitter’, a rare jump from Bollywood to Hollywood, with co-star Mariah Carey. A few years later, alongside with Aishwarya Rai, she played in ‘The Mistress of Spices’.

Later she decided to produce her own work, so she founded her own production company. Padma decided that her first film will be about her ex-husband, Salman Rushdie. She wrote 2 cookbooks, ‘Tangy, Tart, Hot, and Sweet’, and ‘Easy Exotic’ — which took Best First Book honors at the 1999 World Cookbook Awards in France.

Padma’s movie or Tv appariences are: The Ten Commandments (2006), Sharpe’s Challenge (2006), Top Chef (2006), The Mistress of Spices (2005), Boom (2003), Glitter (2001), Caraibi (1999) and Il figlio di Sandokan (1998).

Personal life

Padma has a one brother and one sister. She was in a relationship with business leader Theodore “Teddy” Forstmann, an actor Richard Gere, and with venture capitalist Adam Dell. Lakshmi dated and married Salman Rushdie in 2007, but after three years of marriage, they broke up.


In 2010, she gave birth to a daughter Krishna Thea. Lakshmi was involved in a serious car accident as a teen that left her with a trademark 7-inch scar between her elbow and shoulder following surgery. This sound like the end of her model career but she embraced her scars and they became her own brand.
